YOUR FANTASY NEEDS MORE FANTASY
One of the most popular ways that gambling fans have been getting through the cancellation of sports, is by betting on virtual sports. That’s right, a game based in a fantasy world where you can have all of the athletes you want on your roster has veered farther into fantasy land.
This concept of “simulation betting” is not new, and has been popular in the sports genre of video games for quite some time. What is new however, is the level of acceptance it has received and the implementation of fantasy scoring. Major fantasy sports websites such as FanDuel and DraftKings went as far as to add the events to their website. They then doubled down and spent money using their email marketing platform to promote the events.
WORTH TRYING OR NO?
At one point in the history of “sim bets” it was easy to be skeptical, in fact it still is when dealing with straight win/loss bets between two teams. With the outcome being decided by a coded algorithm, the outcome should be within a certain range most of the time with very little room for deviation.
The addition of a fantasy scoring system adds in many additional variables that make predicting the outcome much more difficult at face value. That gives the skeptic a bit more calm, as it is always easy to be critical of anything that is computerized. To be clear, none of what we are saying has been tested and proven, it is just a feeling. Much like the preference of playing table games at a casino instead of sitting in front of a slot machine.
So down to the brass tax…should you play these virtual contests?
Probably not in all honesty. At least not on a serious level. They can definitely be a fun way to pass an evening if you are bored, and can make for a decently entertaining hobby sporadically.
ARE THEY HERE TO STAY
As discussed earlier in the article, these types of events have been around for years. They most likely will not be going anywhere. They will likely see a decline in popularity however as real sporting events return.
There will still be that little dark corner of the internet where the “sim bets” live for those that enjoyed them more than real sporting events. The bookies taking their rake from the never ending virtual contests prove to be the real winners in this model. Do you, or have you placed sim bets?
