DAK PRESCOTT IS THE BEST QB IN THE NFL
If you chuckled a bit to yourself when reading that, don’t worry, Dak Prescott probably laughs each time he demands to be paid like he is too. The Dallas Cowboys’ starting QB has been negotiating a new contract with the team for quite some time now. In fact he was recently offered a contract that would make him the highest paid quarterback in the history of the sport.
If that sounds ridiculous to you, you are not alone. In fact, it’s reportedly not even true. Both the organization and Prescott’s camp have denied that the recent reports of a five year, $175M deal is not true.
WHAT’S THE STICKING POINT?
Obviously, as with any contract negotiation, money was sticking point number one. Dak wanted a lot of it, and the Cowboy’s wanted to give less. The contract value doesn’t seem to be the problem anymore however.
There have been rumors that Prescott wants $45M in the last season of the deal, as well as rumors that he wants $45M per season for the length of the deal. Neither is confirmed, but both sound wrong considering he was originally asking for $40M per season, and receiving extra money towards the end of the deal benefits the team more than the player.
So what’s the deal…why doesn’t a slightly above average quarterback want to accept money that would pay him well above his talent level?
From all accounts, it comes down to length. At the start of the process the Cowboys wanted to lock him into the contract for seven years, and Prescott was comfortable with three years. Since then the team has come down to five years, which seems like a reasonable compromise between the two terms, but the player has put his foot down at four years.
The purpose of this is to get back to the table more quickly. If Prescott does get the contract he wants and plays well, he gets to renegotiate again soon, and with the “last man paid” mentality of the sport these days, he would receive an even more insane deal at that point.
With the addition of Andy Dalton, and the quality of the next quarterback class coming out, this hardball tactic of Prescott could easily backfire.
PAY THE MAN OR NAH?
It is incredibly accurate to say that Dak Prescott has out performed his rookie deal. He deserves a payday. Does he deserve a top tier payday though? In our opinion, not so much. He deserves to be paid as the tenth best quarterback in the league.
His numbers would dictate a better ranking than that, but as a certified Cowboy fan writing this, rest assured that an enormous amount of those yards get obtained in garbage time against soft zone defense. Getting into those positions was frequently caused by Prescott’s errant throws, or poor decisions.
What do you think, pay the man or nah?
